The headlight switch is something we use every day - ideally after starting up the engine, our first thing is securing our belts and the second is turning on Daytime Running Lights. This was accounted for when this part was designed, but time always wins.
With this style of switch, the most typical failure would be when the detents wear down completely, when the knob no longer "snaps" into position.
For this process you'll need a phillips head screwdriver and a lamp.
- Turn off your headlights and undo the six screws holding the lower dash shell.
OE number of screws: N 914127 004305
OE number of lower shell: A 202 680 75 36
-------------------------
- To access the inside, pull the lower shell towards the driver seat and down - be careful not to break the plastic
For access you'll need to pull the parking brake release, so chock your car for security. In addition, there's a clip solution on the left side of the dash, normally hidden by the door - when possible, carefully separate those bits.
The bonnet release handle won't let the lower shell fall too much. For me the access was enough, but the handle can be removed for more access.
OE number of bonnet release handle: A 124 880 03 20
OE number of bonnet release handle securing screw: N 007983 004285

- Pull the knob off of the switch. Ideally this is difficult, my solution was getting some string behind the knob and using that to pull it off. Behind the knob you'll find a 24mm nut and gain access to the rear foglight check bulb.
Remove both and place them somewhere safe.
OE number of knob: A 202 545 00 81
OE number of check bulb: A 002 544 01 94
OE number of nut: A1075450072
--------------------------
-
- You can remove the switch from behind. Viewing from the front, twist the switch to the left slightly, this way you release it from the dash. Get it out through the opening between the dash and lower shell and remove the connector.
- Connect the new switch up
OE number of switch: A 000 545 60 04
--------------------------
-
- Reinstall everything the way you took them apart and test the switch. Don't forget to install the rear fog light check bulb (new parts DON'T INCLUDE IT).
Disconnecting the battery for this process isn't necessary.
The process is identical on pre-Facelift and post-Facelift W202s and very similar to W124 and W210 models.
