The multifunction relay from Benzes of the 80s and 90s is a known problem source but luckily easy to fix. This unit operates the blinkers, the hazards, the windshield wiper and washer, the defroster for the rear windshield and wing mirrors and trailer electronics in such popular models like the W124, W201, W202 and it even appeared in the W140.
If any of the above mentioned systems malfunctions or doesn't work at all, they might indicate a failing relay - of course, it's not only the relay that can stop working properly, it's better to troubleshoot before ordering a replacement unit as they're quite expensive.
For the replacement you'll only need a Phillips screwdriver. You do not need to disconnect the battery. Pay attention not to let dirt or moisture enter the opened relay and fuse boxes. To make your job easier, put your bonnet in service position.
- The relay can be found in the engine bay fuse and relay box. First, remove the fuse lid.

- Undo the six screws of the fuse box cover, then lift up and pull it out forwards.

- Locate the relay and pull it out, then install the replacement relay. You can only install it the right way, thanks to a plastic peg - this peg should face the front of the car.

A201 821 0047 - Relay for 124 and 201 chassis
A201 821 0147 - Relay for pre-Facelift 202 chassis
A201 821 0247 - Relay for 202 chassis equipped with side blinkers
A202 820 4626 - Relay for post-Facelift 202 chassis
These relays are interchangable on paper. Alas, a ...0247 has worked well in the place of a ...0147 in my case.
----------------------------
- After testing the affiliated systems, reinstall the relay box lid and tighten the screws until snug. Attention: these screws are self-tapping on the 202 chassis. Beware not to start new taps by accident.
- Reinstall the relay box lid and close it.
